Summer in the City 2017: Downtown Durham
Summer is festival season for a reason: long days, great weather, roomier schedules. It’s the perfect time to get outside after a winter in hiding and a spring full of pollen and rain.
When you live at the Brannan, you’re right in the heart of Downtown Durham. Our city’s restaurants, arts scene, and big events are right outside your front door! This summer stick around downtown and see what you can get into.
Catch a Concert
Flowery festival goers flock to Coachella, Ultra, and Lollapalooza for their festival fix, but Durham has one of its own: Moogfest (May 18-21.) The stacked lineup attracts hip-hop and electronic outfits like Talib Kweli, Flying Lotus, and Animal Collective. But it’s not just music: lecturers have their own stage to discuss the intersection of art and science.
Electronic music not your thing? Looking for something a bit more laid back? Bring a towel or a lawn chair and kick it at a free outdoor concert. Durham Central Park is hosting a concert series from June 23rd – 25th, with a final lineup announced soon. The American Tobacco campus will not be outdone, with a host of singer/songwriter and acoustic-focused acts performing all summer. Beer and wine are on deck, and you can even bring the dog.
Dine Al Fresco
There’s something about sun, a breeze and a little shade that just makes food taste better. Downtown has plenty of opportunities to indulge! Chief among them is the summer installment of Central Park’s Food Truck Rodeo, on June 18th. The Triangle has no shortage of food trucks – as we’ve covered before – and you will not leave disappointed. Or with an empty stomach.
If you’re looking for something more formal, downtown has you covered. Geer Street Garden has a great tap list, unique space, and a gorgeous patio. You can also grab Mexican and drinks at Gonza near Brightleaf Square (try the short rib tacos!), or head over to The Pit for some quality Carolinian ‘cue on the upstairs deck.
Be Active
Summer is the perfect time to work off your extra energy – caloric or otherwise. If you’re the mindful type, kick off a Saturday morning with free yoga in Central Park.
Looking for something more intense? The Running of the Bulls happens downtown on June 3rd! Here the horned beasts are only metaphorical, but it’s still a great way to explore Durham neighborhoods and get fit while doing it.
